Case study 04 / Android / Networking
Android Networking App
A native Android application connecting a mobile interface with backend and networking services.
- MY ROLE
- Android & backend integration
- CONTEXT
- Native Android client / active development
- FOCUS
- Kotlin / Jetpack Compose / Coroutines / Android
Overview
A Kotlin Android networking application under active development, connecting a Compose interface with backend integration and Android's VPN service lifecycle. This overview does not claim an app-store release or a fully released end-to-end service.
Problem
A networking application needs an understandable interface while remote operations and platform lifecycle events happen independently of what is on screen.
My role
Kotlin application development, Compose UI, state management, backend integration, persistence and the Android VPN service boundary.
Architecture
Compose screens observe state managed outside the UI. Repository abstractions connect application behavior to remote operations and local persistence. Android platform-service responsibilities remain separate from screen composition.
Engineering decisions
ViewModel and StateFlow boundaries keep asynchronous behavior out of screen composition. Repository abstractions map remote responses into application-level results.
Persisted metadata is reconciled during startup rather than treated as current backend authority. These boundaries improve testability while requiring deliberate ownership of state and lifecycle transitions.
Challenges
The work includes loading and error states, asynchronous backend results, startup reconciliation, cancellation and Android lifecycle changes. VPN service ownership and cleanup need to remain outside UI composables.
Stack
Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, StateFlow, Retrofit, OkHttp, DataStore and Android VpnService.
Result
Implemented Android UI, state-management and backend-integration components, with unit tests around repositories, mappings and startup coordination. The public showcase documents the architecture without distributing the Android project or private service contracts.
